Championship League

2010_leagueIf you are interested in wheel to wheel competition and want to just "show up and drive", SPK has a great competition series for you. First launched late in 2009, the SPK Championship League is focused on one thing, affordable, close racing.  This was accomplished in the first season with close battles at every event. Taking what was learned in the first season, SPK took the game to the next level by adding more karts to the fleet and including weight boxes. With the ability to add as much as 60 pounds to the driver/kart unit, SPK can offer the closest racing possible.

How do I get started?

There is no experience necessary, but you do have to be an SPK member in order to participate. Sign up for the next league event and you are in.

What does it cost?

The cost is 3 member credits.

Do I need my own gear?

It certainly is nice to have your own stuff, but the basic premise here at SPK is grassroots, entry level wheel to wheel, "Just show up and Drive" racing. SPK will provide you with a helmet and a suit. You must have closed toe shoes and gloves if you need them.

When do the league races happen?

We expect to see several leagues develop with different scheduled dates and times. For example, the most leagues meets over 6 consecutive Sundays at 2pm. Additional times can be developed for your group such as a Wednesday night league, a Friday night league, etc.

What about league sponsors?

If your company would like to sponsor a league series, we are open to this and we could name one portion of the Championship League accordingly. Please contact SPK for more information.

How are the weight boxes used?

Each league participant is weighed at registration. We can split the field by weight class, or get the field as close as possible. The heaviest drivers are put into karts with out a weight box, and the light weight drivers will carry up to 60 pounds.

What is the schedule at each event?

Each event consists of 4 sessions as follows:
  • Practice/Qualifier. This is where you get warmed up and the first grid is assessed.
  • Heat 1. The first race grid is fastest to slowest lap time based on the first round warm up.
  • Heat 2/heat3: Inverted grid based on finish of previous heat.

How is the Championship decided?

Each event drivers earn points based on finishing positions. Points for other achievements may also be included (those details will be specific to the league). At the end of a 6 event League a champ is found. Champs of each league through out the year will be invited to the Championship Finals in the fall. At the Finals the 2010 overall Champion will be crowned.

So do you think you have what it takes to be a champion? You will never know until you get out and give it a try. Practice before the league event and take home the glory of winning a wheel to wheel race.
